at the end of that year. In consequence, when the 1947/48 Estimates word proparod, the future establishment of the department had not been finally fixed and the question of whether there should be a Deputy Commissioner or two Assistant Commissioners was still under discussion. A.Tomporary Staff Vote of $60,000 was therefore provided to moot tho salarios of additional appointments to the staff of the department during the year.
Two Assistant Commissioners have since been appointed and those posts have boon included under the Pensionablo Establishmont. It is hoped to recruit, during the coming year, three additional Assessors Grade I, three Assessors Grade II, five Assistant Assessors and six Taxation Officers. It may not be necessary to retain the additional Assessors Grade I for more than three years, by which time the routine of the depart- mont will be firmly established. But, at prosent, collections of Earnings and Profits Tax are considerably in arrears and more staff is needed to restore the position.
A number of additional clerks to meet the extra clerical work have been included undor Temporary Staff as it is too early yet to judgo what the final requirements of the department will be.
